“Perspectives,” opening May 6, 2011 at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo, represents the 25th year for a group of artists known as the Volcano Village Artists Hui. “Perspectives” will have a gala opening reception on Friday, May 6 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. EHCC members, friends and the public are invited. The exhibition will run through May 25, 2011.

Many Hawaii Island residents are familiar with the popular Thanksgiving weekend artist’s tour and sale in Volcano Village. There have also been many local and state shows involving one or several of these artists, all of whom have won awards and recognition in their respective fields. This exhibition will be the first time thirteen members of the Volcano Village Artists Hui have had a collective gallery show.

Uniting the artworks in this show is the theme of celebrating Hawaii’s aina. The island environment blends with each artist’s origins culminating in a fusion of Nature’s offerings and the meditations of each artist’s mind and vision.

In the classic forms of art making – painting, wood carving, block printing, works of glass, metal, clay and woven natural fibers - the artists use tools and materials of the current day as well as time honored methods. More recent art forms of photography and mixed medias are also represented.

This artists group began with just 3 founding members in 1986. Over the years new members have joined and others have left for new endeavors. The Hui focuses on their November Open Studio Tour and a spring Artists in Action event. Guest artists are often invited to participate in the annual events.

The Hui’s spring’s event, Artists in Action, will also be held in Volcano on Saturday, May 21, from 11 am to 3 pm at Volcano Garden Arts. There will be free art demonstrations and hands on art activities for families and visitors. For information on Artists in Action, call Ira Ono at 985-8979.
